[4:12] <[Rui]> hello, does the touchbook require binary only drivers?
[4:13] <mjr> Sadly, for 3d acceleration, yes. AFAIK not for other stuff, but I'm not an official kind of person and not even an owner.
[4:13] <mjr> (as of yet)
[4:14] <[Rui]> mjr: any 2D acceleration available?
[4:15] <[Rui]> I've just been ripped off either by my PostOffice or by eletroworld.cn on a SmartQV7, so now I'm considering another tablet device, however I'm worried about what I'm buying requiring proprietary drivers
[4:16] <mjr> (oh, also, there's proprietary multimedia codecs that run on the DSP coprocessor that can be used for efficient video playback; without, playback of some formats will be slow, possibly unusably so. This is a somewhat lesser issue in that the code running on the Linux side that handles the interfacing is free, but still of course suboptimal and ymmv)
[4:17] <[Rui]> damn.
[4:17] <mjr> not sure about the graphics performance without proprietary drivers
[4:17] <[Rui]> one of the advantages of the smartqs is that most of it works with free software, I think no 3D but at least video acceleration works
[4:18] <mjr> (you can think of that codec code as basically proprietary firmware, which is sadly the norm still)
[4:18] <[Rui]> anyone knows if there is an OpenEmbedded target for it?
[4:18] <mjr> OTOH IIRC there is free theora playback code for the DSP (it was the C64x+, right? ;)
[4:21] <mjr> Yep, there is. Not sure how that performs these days in practice, or if somebody's integrated it into touchbook systems
[4:24] <mjr> Anyway, embedded GPUs are a rather pain in the ass for free software in general. There are no real good options there so far :I
[4:26] <mjr> Rui, and by the way, the situation with smartq with respect to 3d and video acceleration is likely to be pretty much identical to the touch/smart book
[4:28] <[Rui]> mjr: 3D I don't know, but video acceleration I know it's supported
[4:28] <[Rui]> chronolitix (IIRC) have X drivers with support
[4:29] <mjr> or do you mean juts xvideo support or something and not actual video decoding on a coprocessor?
[4:29] <[Rui]> I think they still need some firmware, but it's marginally better than a binary driver which will hold you back on Linux or X version
[4:29] <mjr> 'cause if they do the latter, it'll be proprietary as hell
[4:29] <[Rui]> mjr: that'll probably be in the firmware part
[4:30] <[Rui]> although I'd like better, if at least it won't hold me back on Linux or X support, then it's a temporary solution.
[4:30] <mjr> yeah, which is basically the same as tb (the "firmware" here is user-loadable, dunno about there)
[4:31] <mjr> smartq seems to be samsung (at least v5), probably no theora dsp code there ;I
[4:32] <mjr> ah well
[4:33] <[Rui]> no theora dsp, I'd hazzard... if I understood you correctly, touchbook has free theora decoder?
[4:33] * edt (~Ed@cl-117.bos-01.us.sixxs.net) has joined #touchbook
[4:33] <mjr> there's one for the ti dsp that's inside the omap3, so it should work, but to what extent I've no experience, and as said, I'm not sure if anyone's used it in practice on a tb
[4:35] <[Rui]> ok
[4:36] <[Rui]> it's about two times as expensive as the smartqv7
[4:36] <[Rui]> but has better specs
[4:37] <mjr> well, I have no vested interest here, and as said, they're probably semi-comparably free (or not) in the video department, so *shrug* ;]
[4:37] <mjr> can't say I've looked long and hard at the smartq thingies though
[4:46] <mjr> I resisted the temptation on the original touchbook, smartbook may prove too much

[11:31] <lucian> is the smartbook a display + keyboard for the minibook?
