[19:58] <tommd> On the 'booting' wiki page (http://www.alwaysinnovating.com/wiki/index.php/Booting)
[19:58] <tommd> How are all those variables (setenv) actually set? I can't find any info on x-loader and the AI OE repo directory of x-loader doesn't have any setenv.
[19:58] <tommd> I ask because I'd like to change the settings!
[20:08] <gregoiregentil> very dangerous to change those settings
[20:08] <gregoiregentil> their are set the first time at the factory
[20:09] <gregoiregentil> you can reset them using /usr/bin/ai/reset/reset-nand.sh -f -w
[20:09] <gregoiregentil> you can modify them using fw_setenv as root
[20:19] * Maeslin (~none@142.68.156.148) has joined #touchbook
[20:19] <tommd> gregoiregentil: If seems like that shouldn't be necessary, but to get dm_crypt working it seems I need to alter
[20:19] <tommd> setenv bootargs 'air=2 quiet console=tty1 fastboot omapfb.vrfb=1 omapfb.mode=dvi:1024x600MR-16@60 omapdss.def_disp=dvi omapfb.vram=0:8M,1:4M root=/dev/mmcblk0p2 rootdelay=1 rootfstype=ext3'
[20:19] <tommd> to
[20:19] <tommd> setenv bootargs 'air=2 quiet console=tty1 fastboot omapfb.vrfb=1 omapfb.mode=dvi:1024x600MR-16@60 omapdss.def_disp=dvi omapfb.vram=0:8M,1:4M cryptdevice=/dev/mmcblk0p2 root=/dev/mapper/root rootdelay=1 rootfstype=ext3'
[20:29] <gregoiregentil> ok
[20:33] <tommd> gregoiregentil: Since encrypting the root partition would take a nand change, and I'd like to be able to enable encrypted OSes as an install.sh option, I'm considering reworking the installer to have a rather basic root with a separate home partition. This would be optional - normal install results in what you have now, encrypted install results in this root/home division. Thoughts?
[20:34] <tommd> Oh, is it possible to have the overlay on some non-root partition? What instructs the kernel as to the address of the .overlay directory? That would eliminate any issues with partition sizes - we just need root to be large enough for the squashfs files.
[20:43] <jscinoz_> x-loader confuses me greatly
[20:43] <jscinoz_> i've not managed to get my own kernel to boot :(
[20:44] <tommd> I can boot a 2.6.32-omap-psp kernel - I can boot it after building with a custom config. OTOH, trying to get and idea of how to use u-boot and x-loader is frustrating.
[20:45] <jscinoz_> i built a mainline arm kernel, but it doesnt boot and there is no output on screen :(
[20:45] <tommd> This kernel args issue is a prime example - even though u-boot.bin lives on the removable flash and u-boot is what loads the kernel - I can't get custom args without changing the NAND!
[20:46] <tommd> jscinoz_: "Mainline arm kernel"? Do you have a git for that?
[20:46] <Corsac> jscinoz_: there's not much chance a mainline kernel will boot anyway
[20:46] <Corsac> that's painful, but you definitely want the linux-omap tree, anyway
[20:46] <Corsac> and you'll need patches on top
[20:47] <tommd> Oh, just main line - kernel.org - sorry, I must be tired.
[20:47] <jscinoz_> tommd: as in git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux-2.6.git with ARCH=arm CROSS_COMPILE=armv7a-softfloat-linux-gnueabi-
[20:47] <Corsac> not sure why you want/need to use mainline, but unless you have very good reasons I'd advise using the linux-omap or linux-omap-psp tree
[20:47] <Corsac> (and even with that, it's not always easy)
[20:48] <tommd> Is there a decent summary of the patches used in omap and omap-psp? Who if anyone is pushing this upstream?
[20:48] <tommd> I guess the git changelog is the closest thing to a rundown?
[20:48] <Corsac> hmhm TI and nokia people, afaik
[20:48] <jscinoz_> ok
[20:48] <jscinoz_> the other question
[20:49] <jscinoz_> how does one build xloader and have it actually work
[20:49] <jscinoz_> i built a uboot and x-loader but it does the whole screne-go-white with lines thing
[20:52] <Mrkva> jscinoz_: well, I've built linux-omap-2.6 tree. and I was unable to get 1024x600 framebuffer (only 1024x768, so the bottom of the screen was missing)
[20:54] <jscinoz_> hmm
[20:54] <Mrkva> jscinoz_: but I've had to change bootargs (somehow, I'm not sure how cause I've reseted it to AI defaults to have TB usable) - with the default ones the LCD turned off or it was displaying test patterns
[20:54] <Mrkva> jscinoz_: I'd suggest attaching a serial cable and adding console=ttyS2,115200 to the bootargs
[20:55] <Mrkva> (you can eaisly acces u-boot with your serial cable in case something goes wrong)
[20:55] <jscinoz_> dont have a serial cable
[20:55] <jscinoz_> well what i might do, grab the stock u-boot and x-loader, build a linux-omap kernel instead and see where that gets me.
[20:58] <Mrkva> jscinoz_: good luck. I'm going to buy a USB-rs232 converter cause using an old celeron 300MHz is a little bit painful
[20:58] <Mrkva> sorry, I've to go
[20:58] * Mrkva (~Mrkva@94.127.132.46) Quit (Quit: leaving)
[20:59] <jscinoz_> I've got the stuff needed to make a serial cable
[20:59] <jscinoz_> but i a mnot sure which wires i connect to which of the 3 things on the board
[21:07] * mongrelcat (~taylorh@wifi-roaming-17-220.nss.udel.edu) Quit (Ping timeout: 258 seconds)
[21:07] <gregoiregentil> jscinoz_: read wiki
[21:07] <gregoiregentil> http://www.alwaysinnovating.com/wiki/index.php/Serial_cable
[21:09] <gregoiregentil> In next release, I think that I will include the u-boot env settings (which are currently on NAND) into u-boot itself. This way, NAND wouldn't be needed any more
[21:09] <tommd> gregoiregentil: That would be great
[21:10] <tommd> Encrypted TB + TB->PC Tethering would really be a good combination for me.
[21:14] <jscinoz_> gregoiregentil: yeah i've looked at that page
[21:14] <jscinoz_> gregoiregentil: my cable does not have wires of those colours
[21:14] <gregoiregentil> Sorry!
[21:14] <gregoiregentil> You should read Beagleboard wiki
[21:14] <jscinoz_> ok will do, thanks :)

[22:15] <Khorban> Can anyone help me out with updating to 2010-03.a?
[22:15] <Khorban> I'm a little lost on the manual update method
[22:17] <gregoiregentil> Khorban: wait for 2010-04.a if you are patient.
[22:18] <gregoiregentil> otherwise, you need to update the SD card on a PC or a Linux machine to install 2010-03.a
[22:19] <Khorban> gregoiregentil: No go on a Mac?
[22:20] <gregoiregentil> you need to follow this: https://www.alwaysinnovating.com/wiki/index.php/2010-03.a_errata
[22:23] <Khorban> where does the install-sd script need to be located? i'm navigating to the folder with the file on my hard drive, but I keep getting a "command not found" error.

[22:42] <Khorban> well, i'll keep an eye out for 2010-04.a. Night all.

[22:48] <dpb> gregoiregentil: the topic still says 01.b is the latest
[22:49] <gregoiregentil> correct. 01.b is still the official. 03.a doesn't have all the dev env plus a couple of small mistakes...
[22:49] <gregoiregentil> so 03.a is available but not official
