[6:23] -christel- [Global Notice] Hi all, unfortunately one of our former developers has left behind a memory leak in our ircd software which means we'll need to restart several ircds over the next few days. We're going to stagger it to reduce disruption, and the first round will be happening very shortly. Affected users for now will be about 1300. Apologies for the inconvenience!

[7:10] <dpb> Tiffany_Fe: What's up with your many clients?
[7:10] <Tiffany_Fe> I keep getting disconnected
[7:10] <Tiffany_Fe> and irc takes awhile to figure out I got disconnected
[7:10] <Tiffany_Fe> I actually only have one client
[7:11] <dpb> You must have a poor ISP..
[7:12] <Tiffany_Fe> -christel- [Global Notice] Hi all, unfortunately one of our former developers has left behind a memory leak in our ircd software which means we'll need to restart several ircds over the next few days. [7:12] <Tiffany_Fe> I think this is my problem
[7:13] <dpb> I don't think so. It's just you.
[7:13] <Tiffany_Fe> sorry
[7:13] <Tiffany_Fe> just that my internet has been a bit flaky the past week
[7:14] <Tiffany_Fe> for some reason
[7:14] <dpb> Got any torrents downloading? (those often disturb irc if they're not limited)
[7:14] <Tiffany_Fe> I did have some torrents running
[7:15] <Tiffany_Fe> they weren't dling anything anyway
[7:15] <Tiffany_Fe> just seeding
[7:15] * azaghal_ (n=azaghal@184.228.178.212.adsl.dyn.beotel.net) has joined #touchbook
[7:15] <dpb> well the seeding is the disturbing part :)
[7:16] <dpb> with some torrent programs, you can limit the bandwidth it uses, otherwise it'll use all you have and then irc and other services don't get enough
[7:17] <Tiffany_Fe> hopefully that will stop it
[7:17] <Tiffany_Fe> I closed bittorrent

[13:09] <snlemons> so, from the videos I've seen it looks like the TouchBook might be a bit top-heavy when connected to the keyboard. does the tablet part shake badly when typing, riding on a bus/plane, etc., or is it pretty stable?

[13:21] <snlemons> Q_Continuum: I'd hope that, too, although the issue is more the stability of the folding bit, right?
[13:21] <Q_Continuum> Which is built into the keyboard, but yes
[13:22] <snlemons> I mean, my current laptop has a much heavier base than screen, but the connecting joint is old and worn, so it bounces when I type or an officemate taps his foot too hard. :)
[13:22] <snlemons> Q_Continuum: right. built into the keyboard or not, it could still be unstable.
[13:22] <Q_Continuum> Well, if it wears out, you order a new keyboard - weren't they going to be about $100?
[13:22] <snlemons> Q_Continuum: but if they _start out_ unstable, what option do I have?
[13:22] <Q_Continuum> Then you get a fresh battery to boot (presuming we can't just order the frame, sans battery)
[13:23] <Q_Continuum> I don't think they're unstable, the videos I've seen it seems like a solid hinge.
[13:23] <snlemons> Q_Continuum: can you point me at one that indicates this? I've only seen the mounted version in one official video, and it looked a tad shaky there.
[13:24] <Q_Continuum> Looking
[13:24] <snlemons> Q_Continuum: the one I'm referring to is on the gallery as "TouchBook in action"
[13:25] <snlemons> could easily be shaky picture on the camera, too, so I thought I'd ask if anyone had evidence to the contrary

[13:49] <doc__> even tried the "have tools will assemble request" but didn't get a response
[13:50] <hyc> I've found that when using the TB as a laptop, it's best to just open it flat and work with it on my lap.
[13:50] <hyc> the unit is so small that opened at a "typical" work angle 90-100 degrees you would have to have eyes in your stomach to read the screen.
[13:51] <hyc> so anyway, there's no stability issue when using it this way
[13:52] <snlemons> hyc: interesting technique. is it shaky, otherwise?
[13:52] <hyc> yes, a bit
[13:52] <snlemons> for instance, my desk is a bit wobbly. will I get dizzy? :)
[13:52] <hyc> heh, dunno about that
[13:52] <hyc> I don't really work on a desk, always on my lap
[13:53] <snlemons> ah, yeah the lap idea sounds neat. would never have thought of it. too habitual, I guess. :)
[13:53] <snlemons> MaceN8x0: the question was whether the TB was wobbly/shaky when used as a laptop.
[13:55] <doc__> it may work ok flat on the desk as well

[18:45] <drantin> maybe not
[18:45] <kdas> umm is the touch book a concept or a real thing?
[18:45] <kdas> all i see is rendered photos
[18:46] <drantin> kdas: then you aren't clicking in the right places, or looking at the videos
[18:47] <drantin> also, the real photos have the backgrounds taken out, so they can appear to be renderings :/
[18:47] <kdas> i saw the videos but i mean if i buy one will it ship out or do i have to wait hella fo rit ?
[18:48] <kdas> is there a specs page to show all the i/o ports and cpu etc?
[18:48] <kdas> what you guys use for flash gnash cuz last time i checked adobe don't have no flash player for arm
[18:48] <drantin> you can order now, but there'll be some time until it gets fulfilled
[18:49] <drantin> there's a shipment going out soon, and another next month
[18:49] <yoru> probably gnash, yes.
[18:49] <yoru> at least not adobe flash
[18:49] <drantin> but it's not mass-produced like HP, Dell, etc do
[18:49] <yoru> and: http://www.alwaysinnovating.com/ helps
[18:49] <yoru> you will find he specs etc.
[18:50] <drantin> http://www.alwaysinnovating.com/touchbook/gallery_photo.htm are real photos, but the backgrounds are edited out for some reason :/

[19:01] <kdas> yoru, nice thanks
[19:02] <yoru> OpenGL?? ES 2.0 capable 2D/3D graphics accelerator capable of rendering 10 million polygons per second
[19:02] <yoru> HD video capable TMS320C64x+??? DSP for versatile signal processing at up to 430MHz
[19:02] <kdas> nice
[19:02] <yoru> that should be it. or something alike
[19:02] <kdas> now it just sucks that i would have to wait hella long
[19:03] <kdas> you think they would upgrade the processor to cortex a9 anytime soon ?
[19:03] <yoru> i heard today, that most, if not all, pre-orders should be filled at end of october
[19:03] <yoru> no
[19:03] <yoru> not anytime soon.
[19:03] <yoru> the touchbook just started shipping
[19:03] <kdas> oh this is the first shipment?
[19:03] <kdas> i should wait then
[19:03] <yoru> second?! dont know
[19:04] <yoru> this month and one before i think
[19:04] <yoru> stil, its just at the start of its life
[19:04] <kdas> well i hope that it will kick ass cuz i love arm
[19:08] <kdas> why does it list the batteries as removable ? do they not charge? or is it just so you can replace them?
[19:08] <yoru> you can replace them in case they die in the forseeable future
[19:08] <yoru> so: they charge
[19:11] <kdas> one last question... are all the i/o ports on the tablet or the keyboard?
[19:11] <yoru> dont know. i think on the tablet(at least the external.) but I dont know. you would have to ask someone, who has a touchbook
[19:12] <pliny> The only thing in the Keyboard is the keyboard and a big-ass battery. Everything else is in the Tablet.
[19:12] <kdas> oh sweet so the tablet has a 10hr battery or is that the keyboard?
[19:13] <yoru> both together
[19:13] <yoru> the tablet alone has 3-5 hours
[19:13] <kdas> oh...
[19:13] <yoru> if you put it on the keyboard, if gets more
[19:13] <kdas> naturally
[19:13] <kdas> well i cna't wait till the orders get shipped out so i can buy one i am very excited
[19:14] <pliny> Tablet batt is 6000mAh and Keyboard is 12000 mAh
[19:14] <pliny> People with the devices in hand are reporting 8-10 hours under normal workloads. Power management has not yet been enabled in the current kernels.
[19:14] <kdas> i bet you all that havent got yours yet are hell eager
[19:14] <kdas> pliny, i am a linux dev i hope to contribute ;)
[19:15] <kdas> does any one here actually have one yet ?
[19:15] <pliny> You'll want to look at Open Embedded, then. TB OS is a customised Angstrom Linux.
[19:15] <yoru> since most are idle, there should be some :P
[19:15] <pliny> Was hoping mine would show up today... I'm guessing tomorrow based on previous experience with USPS.
[19:15] <yoru> but in the next days, there should be many more, who get theirs
[19:16] <kdas> cool
[19:16] <kdas> i will try to port archlinux over
[19:16] <kdas> otherwise just work with tb os
[19:16] <yoru> arch would be cool. but im more excited at android and chrome os :P
[19:17] * kdas pukes on chrome os
[19:17] <hyc> android sucks
[19:17] <hyc> I'm porting AI angstrom to my G1. :P
[19:17] <pliny> You might want to check the forum. There's already people mucking with *buntu Arm and Gentoo.
[19:17] <kdas> yak ubuntu and gentoo
[19:17] <kdas> debian i think supports arm
[19:18] <kdas> that would be a good alternative
[19:18] <hyc> cortex-A9 doesn't exist yet
[19:18] <kdas> ummm last time i checked it did?
[19:18] <hyc> but probably by the time they become available next year, it will be worth talking about
[19:18] <hyc> there are 90nm test chips
[19:18] <hyc> no 454nm production chips anywhere
[19:18] <hyc> 45
[19:18] <kdas> right
[19:18] <pliny> kdas: The tricky bit is optimisation. It's not just compiling for Arm, but also dgetting the most out of the DSP...
[19:19] <kdas> tb os is opensource right ?
[19:19] <kdas> pliny, yea well thats why we here ;)
[19:19] <hyc> it's angstrom, yes.
[19:19] <hyc> you just download openembedded and you can build it all yourself. I already have
[19:20] <pliny> Mostly. All the stuff from OE is open, There's some blobs from TI I think, and some of the AI stuff hasn't been licensed open, but probably will be when they get a spare five seconds.
[19:20] <hyc> there are a few AI custom bits but they've published those
[19:20] <hyc> most of their custom stuff is written in python anyway, so you can just read it yourself from the installed image
[19:23] <kdas> cool
