Hello,

I no longer believe that one day will be delivered SmartBook. I propose that we find ourselves another solution: Tablet, keyboard, openhardware, ~ $ 600 ...

Today I started looking for here:

And you have some ideas?

Go!

The PandaBoard is a good starting point if you just need a similarly open motherboard. ARM netbooks are currently pretty rare, if you want a full system you'll probably have to wait until Windows 8 is released. Since Win8 supports ARM (supposedly), there should be a rather rapid increase in the no. of ARM netbooks at that point.

If you don't mind x86, there are plenty of netbooks out there. But the SB seems to be almost unique in that it's both ARM and open, so I'd say just wait. Even if the hardware itself is obsolete by the time it ships, at least you'll have a decent case to use for a PandaBoard/etc.

There's the Genesi Efika MX Smartbook, but I'm pretty sure it doesn't have a touchscreen.

Regarding the liquidware Beagle Embedded Starter Kit, personally I think the screen's too small.

The Samsung Galaxy Tab reportedly contains an ARM core. There's also a compatible keyboard available, although the Bluetooth keyboard you link to is also interesting. However, an open tablet design is another matter. And it looks as if hacking the Galaxy Tab wouldn't be easy. :(

There are some Tab teardowns available: [1] [2] [3]. There's also a Galaxy S Hacking and Development forum, so hopefully similar will be available for the Tab at some point.

If you can wait, the HP TouchPad is due to be out in June. It runs Linux natively, and not Android, webOS. It's based on a real GNU/Linux platform, with UI and apps running in a sandboxed process. Palm left the system open from the get-go, too, so the homebrew community is awesome. HP even made a major server donation to the largest homebrew resource, webOS Internals, not long after buying Palm. With the homebrew tools, it's easy to install anything you can imagine, and using SDL you can expose existing software via an app. webOS Internals, just today acctualy, got an X server working in an SDL window on the webOS phones.

Anyway, it'll sport a Qualcomm Snapdragon dual-core APQ8060 1.2GHz and full Bluetooth support, i.e., all profiles, including keyboard and PAN.

As an android developer I can tell you,the Samsung Galaxy Tab is moderately locked down, and development on it is almost dead, with so many new android tablets coming out soon. Here are some more mainstream android tablets with active development for us.

Notion Ink Adam- Attempting to install ubuntu on it now at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=931214

Nook Color- Low processor specs, no Bluetooth for keyboard, only $250.

Lenovo Ideapad U1- Although priced at $1000, this runs Android on a Snapdragon with 512MB RAM, or Windows 7 on a Core 2 Duo with 4GB RAM as a laptop. Extremely similar to Touchbook. Only time can tell if 'buntu can be installed via WUBI. :D

The Asus Tablets only run android, crippling them when attempting to create media.

The Motorola Xoom price point is predicted to fall as they gain popularity to undercut iPad sales. This can be evidenced at http://www.engadget.com/2011/03/16/motorola-makes-wifi-only-xoom-official-599-on-march-27th/. Maybe these will improve with tablet-centric apps to make the purchase worth it.

Apparently i am not crazy for still waiting- with so many tablets coming out soon! What can we do?

Wow. That really puts the SB/TB to shame. I had great hopes for the SB, but no sense in paying for an inferior product.

There is sense to encourage the free culture. But without informations ... hard to believe it, Maybe SmartBook is a fake project? who has evidence that the Smartbook is well made? Alexandre, Grégroire ? Un peu de courage !
