watching TV (DVB-T)

Postby Dave » Wed Sep 16, 2009 4:56 am

Hi,

with the USB DVB-T tuners nowadays being so small i plan on watching TV on the Touchbook through the Kaffeine package.

Any idea which DVB-T tuner chipsets are best suited for this?

It's a very interesting idea and objective. I don't think that it will be plug-n-play! You need to see if there is a Linux driver for the dongle you intend to buy. If the driver is openly available, there is a chance that it could work.

And when you find that info, I guess it'd be nice to post it somewhere on the wiki. A list of supported/recommended hardware extensions might be a good idea. No advertising, only tested stuff etc.

Thoughts?

excellent idea!

I was thinking the same thing ;)
Some overview like this http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/Video_capture_card would be very useful. (scroll all the way to the bottom)

btw i just got a DVB-T tuner from a friend with the RTL 2831U chipset. I'll first try to get it working on my Laptop (ubuntu) and take it from there.

O and I just ordered my touchbook! :)
I need a new project now that my MythTV setup is running the way I want it to be.

My plan was to use my hdhomerun to stream TV to the touchbook, unless I can get the MythTV fronend working on the touchbook. Since it already runs on the N810 which runs an ARM processor, I believe it is possible http://mythtvnews.com/2008/03/24/full-m ... okia-n810/ .

I'll let you know what I find out, assuming my touchbook ships before I get frustrated enough to switch to a different platform.

There is a dvb-t version, http://www.silicondust.com/products/hdhomerun_dvbt.

The ATSC version works with MythTV http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/Silicondust_HDHomeRun, but the DVB-T looks like it works as well but is under development.

It's a more expensive solution, but it removes having to find drivers for the touchbook.
