12-10 fails to boot

Anything related to the Touch Book hardware

Just wanted to post my experiences trying to install 12-10.
I am using the linux install method on Ubuntu 10.10. On one computer, I get the white and black screen at boot. On another computer, I an able to boot into Android only. Trying to load the OS selector results in a short pause, after which Android boots. I am using the same files downloaded through the torrent and card reader for both installs.

All,

To make the debug and support from our team more efficient, can you *exactly* describe the steps you followed especially for the Linux method. Please paste the output of an fdisk -l and the exact command you are typing in the command line. Please also check the md5sum of your files. That way we may try to narrow the issues.

Thanks in advance.

I downloaded ai-all.zip from http://www.alwaysinnovating.com/release/latest/, which I then copied to a usb thumb drive.

I put the thumb drive in the TB,

I booted into my old os and typed:

sudo -s
wget http://www.alwaysinnovating.com/release ... install.sh
chmod a+x reinstall.sh
./reinstall.sh

As per instructions.

After downloading some files the TB prompted me to reboot, which I did.

I pushed the power button to enter the multi-os graphical interface. Then chose Advanced menu.

Option 6, and followed instructions. The TB recognised the ai-all.zip from the thumb drive and proceeded to install 5 things. Between something like 3 and 5 there was the continuous error message 'sleep: invalid number '.05', nonetheless the TB finished installing all 5 things, and prompted me to reboot.

I used the power button to shut down the device.

At which point it became impossible to start the TB up again. There is no response to pushing the power button at all.

Not having a card reader I am unable to try one of the other installation options.

I suggest doing yourself a favor and buying a card reader. They aren't that expensive. In my experience, they are very useful, and as a Touch Book owner I find it practically essential.

Hi All,

I tried to install release 2010-12, but also can't get it to work. To help AI investigate the trouble I will describe what I have done.

I installed on Windows XP SP3 as described. The md5 checksum was ok. The newly installed card only gave me the now infamous white flash and nothing more when booting. I then tried a backup card with 2010-11 and it also failed to boot.
After a lot of experimenting this is what seems to work to get 2010-11 working again (it did not work for 2010-12):
- insert card
- try to boot (does not even flash)
- remove power cable of top battery from board
- try to boot (now flashes)
- reconnect power cable of the top battery to board
- now 2010-11 boots again

Very weird behaviour. I do not seem to get 2010-12 working at all.

Kind regards,

Just for info. When I installed 12-10 I learned that if the SD card is not "good" the TB will do nothing. Either My card was bad or the loaded program was bad. Switched to a different card that had a good 12-10 on it and it loaded on the first press of the power button. I used Linux and a card reader with the files downloaded from the mirror site ahead of time.
I hope this helps someone. 8-)

An update on progress with 12-10 version. As posted before the usb stick install resulted in a tb which didn't respond to the power button at all, and wouldn't boot. I've now bought a card reader and tried the windows xp method.

The hash check on the downloaded sd-card.gz is verified and correct.

Using the updater program will write it on the card, the result is the same: Unresponsive tb.
Repeatedly pushing the power button makes the screen flash white for a moment.

Since the sdhc card was working fine with the previous os I don't see how it could be a problem. The file downloaded correctly as indicated by the hash check. Leading me to believe there is something wrong with the data in the files (both sd-card.gz and ai-all.zip), or the way it formats the sd card.

One thing might be of note, I am updating from a very old version of the OS. The one it came shipped with one year ago.

I've used the sd-card.gz and the Windows Updater program to install 2010-12.a on two different SD cards (8 GB (original w/ TB) and 16 GB (Transcend)) and it worked fine on both.

You might want to try zeroing your card. ( See: viewtopic.php?f=8&t=1245&p=7730&hilit=zero+card#p7730 )

Alternatively, I'm wondering if it might be a power issue. Do you have it plugged in when you try to boot?

Hi all.

I finally got 2010-12 to work. I removed the second partition on the sd card (I used the sd card that had 2010-11 on it to install 2010-12 on). Windows could not figure out how big the sd card was anymore, but after installation acoording to the instructions the card now boots correctly the first time.

Kind regards,
