AI Credibility

Postby Randwulf » Sun Jul 25, 2010 8:30 am

AI needs to work on their credibility or their "new crazy innovation" isn't going to get them anywhere. If they aren't going keep there promises to those of us who bought the original Touch Books, who's going to believe any other claims they make. They need to keep their customer base happy. They need to open up about what there doing and what their plans are. They need to demonstrate integrity.

I bought my Touch Book with the understanding that the Hardware was final and the Beta Software would be finished in time. I'm willing to give them that time, but it seems they would rather spend their time on "new crazy innovation". The last official OS update was 2010.01b. January! The Roadmap ( http://www.alwaysinnovating.com/wiki/index.php/Roadmap ) is woefully out of date. If they cannot keep their promises because the hardware was defective or whatever then they need to make things right somehow.

I want to what AI plans to do to keep me, and its other existing customers happy, and rebuild its own credibility.

To be honest, I have already lost hope. I'm very disappointed, but i'll try to keep me feedback in this message constructive...

AI, you let me down.

- None of your deadlines have ever taken place.
Even though I kind of understand the delay with the original product year ago, it's not easy creating almost completely new kind of hardware from scratch, the continuous time table failures after that, mainly with the software releases and this "new crazy never seen before innovation", are giving a rather bad impression of you. Don't over estimate yourselves this much. I'd rather like you telling "This will take a little longer" than waiting for nothing and seeing the timetable changed every month.

- Hardware..
It is widely known that the first batches were bad quality hardware, put together just to not break the timetable too much. USB power is badly designed, which results in a device that cannot be turned on. As I said I do understand the delay with the hardware. Another project called OpenPandora was nearly 2 years late with their hardware. However, once the OpenPandora shipped, it was truly a ready-to-use, polished product for a normal customer to use. Please, just break the timetable if the option is to have bad quality hardware instead.

I never used your software, except for the kernel which to this date I haven't seen supporting cpu idle or scaling. Bad. Because the single most important thing on laptops and netbooks for me is the batterylife. TouchBook has bigger batteries than a normal x86 laptop, but has never managed the 10 hours promised, in use.. at least not without hardware modifications.

My advice here is. Please provide your customers, a realistic information. Ortherwise they will be disappointed.

When i encountered it, it just looks likes the system i was looking for. After some research and following this product i noticed some issues. Meizirkki already has given the best reasons. The purpose of this device suits my needs.

AI may/must answer the following
    1) Currently http://pandaboard.org/ is coming soon and it will be based on omap 4 or will the BeagleboardXM be used, based on omap 3?
(If pandaboard will be used i can understand teh delay, but why didn't you give an announcement?)
    2) What "Craziest innovations"/improvements can we expect in the new Touchbook
(for example battery, mountpins and other currently known issues)?
    3) What can you tell about the status of the "Craziest innovations"
(for example finishing/release date, todo/finished task)?
    4) Can you tell us what to expect from now to December?

I had high hopes for this product. Due the lack of information, communication and update of the AI, i'm not sure that i wanna buy. I don't have a problem in customizing the kernel or sorts, but i don't wanna spent a lot of time in getting the system run properly. I really miss the enthousiasm of AI for their Touchbook. To keep the (potential) customer happy and interested you need to communicate and listen to the community. The last announcement dates from 19 may and goes about a joining the team. The last relevant announce refering to the touchbook dates from December 2009 about counterbalances shipments. I can't imagine that AI doesn't have anything new to announce about the Touchbook or did AI went on holiday.

The openpandora community is much more alive then the touchbook. You can find a lot of daily replies. I can't say that for the Touchbook community. The delay of openpandora was a good decision. Look at the rates people are giving the openpandora device.

I'm personally *VERY* disappointed in AI and the Touchbook product. If it was working (it is not), I'd be selling it right now.

Shame on you, AI! You've really screwed things up with the Touchbook.
